In 2008 John Simpson designed a new library for eminent architectural historian Professor David Watkin to house his extensive collection of 6,000 books. The new interior was ingeniously designed within the bare existing walls of a room whose original eighteenth century fittings had been removed in the 1930s. The book cases which run around the room conceal the uneven planes of the old walls whilst internal arches lend symmetry to the historic windows enabling the historic exterior to remain unaltered. The shallow segmental arches which frame the bookcases are reminiscent the work of John Soane who has been a source of inspiration for John Simpson and also an important subject of Professor Watkin's own research.
