Ptolemy's Bar

London, UK

The restaurant is designed within two parallel interconnecting arches under London Bridge. In 1968, when the new bridge was built, the brick vaults, which formed part of the 1830 Rennie Bridge, were covered with a cement based spray applied render as a reinforcement. This has given the place internally a catacomb like appearance. For commercial viability the building work had to be carried out on a very tight budget so that the design had to achieve maximum impact at minimum cost. The fitting out was carried out by Moss Construction Ltd. and the painting and decoration by Edward Kentish.
