The entrance hall is defined by a pair of Greek Doric columns at each end, and by a single column in the centre of each long side. These columns bear capitals carved with anthemeon ornament in an alternating lotus and palmetle pattern. The entrance was specifically designed as a space for sculpture and contains a frieze and two figures by the sculptor Alexander Stoddart. The frieze depicts the reign of Queen Elizabeth II as prosperous against the background of the Cold War. This is shown allegorically through scenes from Homer’s Illiad and the Odyssey. The figures on the columns recall the youths in the Odyssey holding torches aloft in the Hall of King Alcinous and Queen Arete.
