Hawkes and Wainer Opticians

London, UK

Hawkes and Wainer are a long established City of London Opticians. The detailing of the shop and the dark mahogany of the joinery was chosen to emphasise this, drawing parallels with the City of London Livery Halls and the interiors of the City churches. The display racks for the frames and spectacles and the mirrors and stock cupboards were built into the cabinet work incorporating a series of herms. A large double height space within one of the Leadenhall shop units served as the main shop at ground level. In order to best make use of the space, an archway was built in which to incorporate cupboards and filing cabinets and also to provide a mezzanine above for the accounts department. The functional aspect of the display racks and the storage drawers of the shop have been given a significant amount of consideration in the overall design so as to ensure that the quality of service traditionally provided by Hawkes and Wainer is maintained.
