MCR Hall

Oxford, UK

Lady Margaret Hall opened in 1878 as the first women’s college at the prestigious University of Oxford. John Simpson Architects was commissioned to design a masterplan for the enlargement of Lady Margaret Hall to provide new facilities for both undergraduate and graduate students. The design for the new masterplan includes two new quadrangles and builds upon the tradition of LMH to enhance the work of notable architects such as Reginald Blomfield, Giles Gilbert-Scott and Raymond Erith. The first building commissioned was the Pipe Partridge building, which houses undergraduate students and provides multi-functional teaching spaces and conference facilities. The building provides 74 new student rooms conducive to private study and the Simpkins Lee Theatre, which incorporates acoustic technology to ensure that it is a suitable venue for both lectures and musical events. The Pipe Partridge Buildings was awarded the Georgian Group Award for the Best New Classical Building
